.....The title of the topic today is going to be bacterial vaginosis not a non-specific disease.
And I've chosen that title very carefully because for many, many years, and in fact still in many areas bacterial vaginosis is really known as non-specific vaginitis and I hope to convince you with my lecture that this is not the case, but that we are dealing with a very specific entity which has very significant implications for the health of young women......
.....Prevalence of the disease is very high. It obviously depends on the population you're looking at, but it'll range in a private gynecology office around 15%, in clinic populations in large academic centers it ranges from 10 to as high as 35%. Not unexpectedly very high rates in sexually transmitted disease clinics where up to 60% of patients will have bacterial vaginosis.....
